Code of Conduct

A public document setting the behavioural ground rules for a community.

A code of conduct is a short, public document that defines how people are expected to treat one another in a community: be respectful, assume good faith, no harassment, no discrimination, and stay on topic. Its purpose is to keep the project welcoming, especially to newcomers, who are the people most easily driven away by hostility. A code of conduct is not about silencing disagreement; you can argue passionately about a technical decision and still follow it. Good ones explain clearly how to report a problem and who is responsible for handling reports. Consistent enforcement, even against popular or skilled members, is what gives the document real meaning rather than leaving it as decoration.
